Here’s a wonderful little story to kick of 2015. I found this one on Autoblog, and I’m giving them full credit, though I suspect the local news is the real hero here. Bob Sportel bought himself a 1957 Chevy Truck to get to his new job, and continues to drive the same truck today. He claims the vehicle has around 300,000 miles on it, but can’t be sure because the odometer hasn’t worked in years. It’s rusty and falling apart, but it gets the job done.  I thought I’d mention the story here on HMC as it’s one of those feel-good stories about a person and their prized truck. It just goes to show what you can do when you are determined to save a little money.

News sources:,

To start of the week’s news, I wanted to pose a question to the HMC audience.   Aaron L. posed a great question in the comments earlier today. His vehicle has around 185,000 miles and rust is starting to creep onto his car. He was wondering how all of the high-milers out there mitigating the oncoming rust-storm? Do you have any strategies or tips? How to do you handle the eventual repairs? Do you take your car to an expert?  Use the comments down below to discuss rust. I eventually plan to create a list of high-mile techniques that we can use to keep our cars running to a million and beyond.  I plant o put it next to the hall of fame.

Here we go. Now this is a story that really suits this blog.

Road & Track have purchased a twenty-five-year-old Mazda Miata with 325 000 miles on  it off of craigslist. That kind of mileage alone is something I would blog about here, but it gets better than that. They want to take it to a million miles and they are asking people to help them do it. This is a pretty exciting idea. There is a facebook page where they are recording the journey. I hope they keep up with it. I would love to write about when that car hits the big million. We’ll be following the story here.  I don’ t know about you, but I’ve always been a fan of the Mazda Miata.

What’s this blog all about?

This blog is a collection of cars that have mileage reaching past what would be considered normal. People that have put hundreds of thousands of miles on their cars. I have been fascinated with high mileages cars since I read about the great Irv Gordon and his journey with his Volvo P1800. Not everyone can have the fame he has had, but maybe, just maybe, I can share stories about those who have taken their cars beyond what is considered ‘normal’ mileage.
