Surprises come in many packages. I got a nice e-mail surprise last week with a letter from Eddie at the Freeman Motor Company(@freemanmotorco) . His message outlined the story of Terry Garland and his 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300E with 588,648 miles on it.  Garland recently retired the vehicle and with the help of the Freeman Motor Company, donated it to Bob’s Auto Cafe, a non-profit that trains mechanics.  I’m sure those mechanics really appreciated working on a car with such stamina and vigor.

Here is some background on the car in question:

Garland was the second owner of the vehicle. He purchased it with 62k miles on the Odometer.

It was used as a daily driver on trips throughout Seattle and the west coast. Garland says there were few to no issues with the Benz.

He had all the maintenance done at MBI Motors in Portland, and got to know every tech there by name. He claims he had to the oil changed ever 3000 miles on the dot.

The car was purchased in the early 1990s from former Don Rasmussen’s location in downtown Portland.

After Garland retired the car, he replaced with with a 2014 C250 Benz.  He says he still misses the truck of the old 300E.

At the time the car was donated to Bob’s Auto Cafe it was still running.

I want to thank Eddit at Freeman Motor Company for sharing this story with me. I also want to congratulate Terry Garland for getting himself and his former Benz in the Hall-of-Fame. Well done.

Update: Here is the full story of the 300E in question with photos of the car. I’ve asked if Freeman Motor might let me use one of the photos here.
